"The Constitution…its only keepers...the people"
George Washington

The theme for 2009

Independence day is an opportunity to renew hopes and remind us of our everlasting duty to remain vigilant as keepers of the Constitution. Though it was President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden who took the oaths of office to defend the Constitution, we, as American citizens, must realize that we are truly the last line of defense for the Constitution. We gather with like-minded citizens and reach out to help educate others regarding the potential of America’s prosperity under the Constitution. We follow the wisdom of the founders and heed the words of George Washington about the Constitution. He stated, “The Constitution… its only keepers, the people.” Like the founder's intended, we seek limited government, more responsibility and — with God’s help — a better world.

Write a 1000 word essay that addresses one or more of the following questions:
1.    What is the Constitution?
2.    What would be the consequence of the people’s failure to guard the Constitution?
3.    What other “keepers” could there be for the Constitution?
4.    Why did the founders think that the “hands of the people” would offer the best security of the constitution rather than any other hands?
5.    What features make our Constitution unique from every other constitution? (i.e., the division of powers, source of rights, laws, etc…)
Deadline for essay submission is June 1, 2009.
